Canister vacuums are 2-piece units. A separate canister on casters is pulled around, but the physical vacuuming is done with a separate air hose and wand attachment. The agitator can make a big difference in the ability of the machine and it's worth the cost to pay a little extra to have that functionality. If you can find a unit with adjustable suction power, that can be very advantageous too, particularly for use on drapes and furniture.

Some people wonder which variety of unit is ideal. The simple fact is it is dependent on personal choice. Vacuuming is more pleasant work when you like what you're using.
