Adcetris The Latest FDA Approved Drug To Deal With Lymphoma Cancers
On Aug 19 2011 the FDA has certified Adcetris, a new medicinal drug to fight Hodgkin lymphoma and systemic anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL).
This is the first FDA authorized drug to cure Hodgkin lymphoma since 1977 and the first time a drug was given the green light to treat ALCL.
Lymphomas are different types of cancer of the lymphatic system, Hodgkin's lymphoma is a lymphoma cancer that widely spreads from one lymph node group to another.
Medicinal trials with Adcetris have demonstrated complete recovery in 34% of men and women with Hodgkin Lymphoma and a partial improvement in 40% patients.
The test results have pushed the FDA to authorize the drug under it's accelerated authorization program allowing approval of very specific medication to heal life-threatening disease types based on data retrieved from medicinal trials.
This approval permits access for patience to the drug substance even before 100 % approval is provided.
Adcetris combines antibody and medication. The combination of both helps the antibody to connect the medication to the infected lymphoma cells.
Lymphoma has in general two forms known as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's lymphoma. The second is the most common among the two. The condition is a malignant type of cancer that occurs in the lymphatic system, having an effect on the different structures. Immature lymphocytes are often produced with this type of cancer, in which metastasis is possible. The good news is, the prognosis of lymphoma is very good with the advanced treatments of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical procedures. The most frequent symptom of lymphoma is an enflamed painless lymph node. The new drug substance Adcetris is designated to cure these different types of cancer.
