In the mid 1930's Tom Kaarhaus, a Norwegian born immigrant opened a boat shop in the McKenzie River area. He is recognized with planning and making the first drift boat, the Rapid Robert. Even though there is debate that surrounds who is the first to develop the drift boat, it appears that the Rapid Robert preceded Woodie Hindman's design, the Prince Helfrich Double Ender. Apparently, both the Rapid Robert and the Prince Helfrich Double Ender helped to influence the design for the first McKenzie River Drift Boat.

At present manufacturers of the drift boat offer little variations in hull design to develop greater maneuverability, strength and ease of rowing (efficiency). The drift boat is designed to endure the varied river conditions. These boats are principally designed for the professional and new fishermen and women, but of course adaptable for other river sports enthusiasts who like to run rapids, explore and camp.
