Why Clone Golf Clubs Can Slash Your Handicap

For a start, the main manufacturers of clone golf clubs are true golf companies in their own rights. Their own research and development departments turn out club designs that are manufactured using the same materials as the big OEM's. These golf clubs use the same design features such as club volume, moment of inertia and cavity backs, to name just a few.

The rules of golf lay down strict limits when it comes to club design. Club heads have to abide by these restrictions, otherwise they are considered to be non-conforming and prohibited for use in competitive play. That's not only at the top levels of the game. Using a non-conforming driver in your monthly medal may well see you being disqualified.

The top manufacturers of golf clones will submit their clubs to the game's governing bodies for approval (USPGA in the USA, R&A in Europe) in the same fashion as the main OEM's. This is an expensive undertaking and nobody producing substandard fakes is going to invest that kind of time and money on submitting clubs, only to see them turned down.

Take a driver for example. The maximum volume allowed under the rules of golf is 460 cc for the club to be conforming. It's not enough for a producer to say their drivers are under 460 cc. The USPGA and the R&A have to confirm they aren't. If drivers do come in under the limit, they are listed on the Conforming Driver lists. If they fail the test, they are listed on the Non-Conforming Driver lists.

Quick note here. Some suppliers of inferior knock-offs trumpet their drivers as being conforming by stating their clubs are not on the non-conforming lists. All that translates to is that they haven't submitted their clubs for testing. Conforming drivers go on the conforming list. If a club isn't on the non-conforming list, it isn't necessarily conforming.

Creating conforming clubs takes a lot of attention and a lot of manufacturing skill. The limits placed by the rules are very strict and it only takes a tiny manufacturing discrepancy to end up with non-conforming clubs. Dimension isn't the lone design element limited by the rules. With restrictions on club-face spring back for instance (the Coefficient of Restitution) being affected by even the smallest deviation in the thickness of the face, quality control during manufacturing is vital.

Clone clubs from the main producers conform to the rules of golf and will make a much smaller dent in your wallet. Using the same quality materials as the big OEM's and with the same (or better) golf shafts, these are premium golf clubs that will make your golf that much more fulfilling. As a bonus, many of the top line manufacturers offer custom build options on their clubs.

What you end up playing is a set of excellent, conforming, custom assembled clubs that will perform as good as, and usually a whole lot better, than those expensive off-the-rack OEM's. And all that without the price tags.

Not a bad deal for a set of custom golf clubs.
